If a post contains a link that is not on the whitelist, you'll be prompted to approve. To access this option, please visit settings for any community you maintain and select the third option in the Community Moderation box (located in the lower left-hand corner). Click the enable link to custom-edit your community's whitelist, which has been prepopulated with trusted domains. You can manually add or delete URLs in the text box. Please note: If you're the maintainer of an unmoderated community, you may see the radio button for this setting checked, even though it's not active. This is a known issue. Please select whichever option you prefer and click Save Changes at the bottom of the page. If you're happy with your current settings, then no need to do anything!
  3. TMI, dude: We've added some fun FREE sponsored vgifts! You can send up to 50 TMI vgifts to mutual friends (btw, you cannot send free vgifts to communities). Why, hello there. It’s time for another Die/Toshiya post (hurrah) and this time, I’ve been asked to help out. Fingers crossed that I do a good job, eh? XD

Now, it seems these boys are natural entertainers, giving their all in live shows and music videos and working it for the photographers camera. But, I’m more interested in when they’re out of the spotlight, when they’re chillaxing and hanging out together, when they’re waiting backstage, when they’re being all ‘touristy’ together. It’s these times that I find more inspiring, that makes my muse more excited, because I think we see their true relationship come out more, when they’re not showing off or acting like tough rock stars.

Random Question Wed #18: Who is your favorite Dir en grey member(s) and why?

Kyo

His voice and lyrics interest me. I love how he can push himself to new limits, and takes everything with such passion. I like the way he expresses himself on stage, and he was the first person from the band that my thoughts set on. I wanted to learn more about him, and I have through his lyrics and voice.

For me there's actually many reasons, but I really don't know how to put them all into words.

Weekly Playboy 12.28 No. 52 - Kaoru Interview

Translated by Nao at www.orchestrated-chaos.com

DIR EN GREY, a band that debuted during the golden age of Visual Kei bands in the late 90s, is now popular worldwide.
They removed their loud(flashy) clothes and make-up, the reason is that they have successfully transformed to a dark violent metal sound, the leader Kaoru tells us of their daily battles overseas.

"I thought that they called us from overseas just for show"

"When we wear make-up we don't look as if we're dribbling with sweat"

--The new single "Hageshisa to, kono mune no naka de karamitsuita shakunetsu no yami" 's title is symbolic, the song has a very complex development.

Kaoru: We wanted to cram in a lot of things in the single. We did it without deciding so much on our path.

--Honestly, have you ever thought of performing this complex song in a live is hard?

Kaoru: I always think about that(Laugh). We made the song while thinking of the live atmosphere but we don't pay much attention to the performance. Sometimes I have thoughts when playing a phrase, "Will I be able to play this during lives?"(Laugh)

--Were you conscious that you were doing visual kei at the time you formed the band?

Kaoru: Even from before the word itself visual kei didn't catch on. But I thought that it a was common path for bands to wear flashy clothes and be on a flashy stage. When I was in middle school and high school, I was listening to X and the like.

--So you became free from the equation that Music=Flashiness, around what time did you turn into your current style?

Kaoru: Around 4-5 years ago. When we started thinking that we should express more of the inner aspect, I noticed that in whatever kind of feeling we performed we will still look like we're lumped along with the others. For example, even if my sweat is really dribbling, when I wear make-up it won't look like that. Also, you'd want to naturally wipe all that sweat but you can't (Laugh). I started noticing those things and doing lives became annoying. And then, even if the live starts at 6pm in the evening, but because of make-up we have to be in the venue at 10am in the morning. It felt like we have done a lot (Laughs).

--So what was the reason why you wanted to express more of the inner aspect?

Kaoru: I think the feelings in the song became richer and the flashy outfits will lose against the song. Even before our world-view is very dark but when the make-up was gone it became even more dark.

GiGS No. 315 January 2010 - Kyo Interview

Translated by Risu at www.orchestrated-chaos.com

The world-view that this vocalist, who is above the rest, tries to portray and its mode of expression is!?

With a voice that has overwhelming energy, Kyo who sings emotionally with an expression of feeling that cuts right through into the listener’s heart.
With his one and only absolute existence, what did he want to express in this new single?

Lyrics are something that you can’t understand the meaning of when you read it from the start to the end

--The “VINUSHKA (Restricted Ver.)” that was included in the clip collection contained videos of the atomic bombing and the victims of the atomic bomb. After seeing that and knowing the new song’s title, “Hageshisa, to kono mune no naka de karamitsuita shakunetsu no yami” (the violence and the darkness of the burning heat entwines in my heart), I thought that it was literally that. Then when I listened to the new song, the emotions were vented out and the sadness/grief and gruesomeness was communicated. I thought that this was written from the perspective of the atomic bomb victims. What kind of images or videos were in your mind when you were writing the lyrics?

Kyo: It hasn’t changed much from before, as expected it was the color. It also appeared in the title of this song, red and black things that are really crazily swirling/wrapped around each other, but underneath it is something really cold. For the people who caused the pain, when they realize what they’ve done, I wonder how they would behave. For those who were also hurt, will they go in the direction of not wanting to become like those people or would they definitely not want to blend/mix in. But, the meaning of the lyrics is not just that, it was written with the black color expressed as darkness, and it had something more different interspersed within its’ plot/story. That’s why, even if you read the lyrics in passing, I think you wouldn’t understand the meaning. But what’s left after you read it? That method hasn’t changed from “UROBOROS” and I give that importance/take care of that. What’s going to be left is different for each and everyone, right? I think that’s interesting. In a way, I am entrusting that.
